|The threat of disaster is nothing new to citizens of Tampa Bay. Threatened every year by the risk of hurricanes and tornadoes, most Floridians have learned how to cope with the risk of natural disasters by surveying their property for possible debris hazards, protecting their windows with plywood, and various procedures for safe evacuation out of the area. Fundamentally, preparation for possible terrorist events is no different. It simply requires knowing what to do if an incident occurs and developing a plan to safely direct your family's response.
Personal Response to Terrorist Incidents
The key to effectively responding to terrorist attacks is havinga plan. As a minimum, you should at least know the basic guidelines for responding to different types of terrorist events. Obviously, circumstances vary in every terrorist attack, and what may be the safest action in one situation may not be safe in another. Nevertheless, there are certain guidelines and procedures for responding to terrorist situations that can greatly reduce your risk of harm.
There are several principal types of scenarios for which you should be prepared. Click each of the following links to explore each topic in detail.
Family Disaster Planning
Every family should develop a plan to direct actions in the event of a disaster. This plan should account for communication between family members, logistics (transportation, emergency supplies, financial needs, etc.), and response actions in the event of different types of emergencies.
The Department of Homeland Security has produced a special workbook to aid families in developing disaster response plans. Click here to download the Ready.Gov Brochure in PDF format.
