According to statistics released by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), the statewide rate of crime in 2002 was the lowest since since 1972. However, here in Tampa Bay, that trend has not been true. Contradicting the statewide improvement, many Tampa Bay area communities have experienced an increase in major crimes including homicide, rape, and robbery.
Many people are quick to attribute this trend of increased crime to a perceived failure by local law enforcement agencies. However, it is important to understand that law enforcement's role is not preventative in nature. Rather, law enforcement agencies are focused primarily on intervening and investigating crimes after crimes have occurred. Crime Prevention, in its truest sense, is a community function that relies on the efforts of all citizens, businesses, and organizations.
